Pool landscaping · Melbourne

Make the pool belong
to the whole landscape.

Considered pool landscaping and surrounds for Melbourne homes—integrating levels, circulation, materials, planting, entertaining and the wider garden.

Beyond the pool edge

A pool should not feel inserted into the backyard.

The strongest pool landscapes begin with the whole property: the home, outlook, level changes, movement, entertaining and the way the garden will mature around the water.

Story Landscapes designs and constructs the landscape surrounding new or existing pools. We coordinate the interfaces that are often treated separately—coping, paving, drainage, fencing, planting, lighting, access and outdoor living.

We do not build the swimming-pool shell. We work with the pool builder and relevant consultants so the landscape design, construction sequence and finished thresholds are resolved before expensive work collides on site.

Complete landscape scope

The landscape around the pool, considered together.

Every project differs, but the surrounding landscape may bring together the following elements.

01

Pool position and whole-site planning

02

Coping and material transitions

03

Natural stone and paved surrounds

04

Drainage, falls and finished levels

05

Pool fencing and compliant access coordination

06

Steps, retaining walls and level changes

07

Outdoor showers and service integration

08

Planting suited to pool conditions

09

Landscape lighting and evening use

10

Entertaining areas and connection to the home

How we approach it

Resolve the interfaces before construction.

01

Levels first

Pool beam heights, house thresholds, drainage falls and garden levels must work together before finishes are selected.

02

Choose materials for the conditions

Surfaces need to be considered for heat, slip resistance, weathering, maintenance and repair—not appearance alone.

03

Coordinate the teams

Pool and landscape construction overlap. Clear responsibilities and sequencing prevent avoidable rework and compromised details.

Common questions

Before the project begins.

01

Does Story Landscapes build pools?

We design and construct the landscape around the pool, but we do not construct the swimming-pool shell. We coordinate our work with your appointed pool builder and relevant consultants.

02

When should the landscape designer become involved?

Before the pool position, levels and major interfaces are locked in. Early coordination gives the home, pool and wider landscape a better chance of working as one.

03

Can you landscape around an existing pool?

Yes, where the surrounding renovation forms part of a substantial, complete landscape project. Existing levels, drainage, fencing and pool condition need to be assessed.

04

Do you only install pool paving?

No. We do not position pool paving as a small standalone service. Our work considers the surrounds as part of the complete landscape.
